Reflect on the work you did to collect information for the SBAC testing requirements. What stood out to you as key discoveries?
There is a lot that stood out to me as I collected information. First, I learned about my lack of technological education. I am Leading Edge Certified, but besides that, I do not understand the systems, vocabulary and trouble-shooting when it comes to the technology of technology. When I spoke with Alex, there were many times when we needed to stop to discuss just the workings of the bandwidth and what makes the internet slow or fast depending on the time of day. Even though I am reflecting on my own lack of knowledge, I am aware of my colleague knowledge as well on technology. Which leads me to think that as a staff, we all need training in technology. If and when our tech team is away, we need to have some knowledge on how to problem-solve. I am trying to teach my students these skills, yet I clearly see how dependent we are on one or two people. Teachers, staff and other administration must also know how to operate in the server room or open up applications that provide a secure environment for students to be online. Lastly, I feel that only the testing classroom teachers and staff will be getting comfortable with administering the SBAC. As a 10th grade teacher, my students are not testing this year, however, I am preparing them for a test I know very little about. I am wondering how all grade level teachers can get experience with the SBAC while it is only being administered in certain rooms for now. I have confidence that HSHMC will take steps to teach the other teachers, but I would like to be in the classroom to see how the students react to the online experience.
